Rheinland-Pfalz: Where Gold in the Glass

There is a region in Germany where you do not need to dig deep into the earth to find gold. Here, gold can be found among the vines, in bottles of wine, and in a rich culture passed down through generations. This is Rheinland-Pfalz, the region responsible for around 70% of Germany’s wine production and one of the country’s most important wine-producing areas.

On 16 October 2026, wine enthusiasts in Ho Chi Minh City had the opportunity to discover this remarkable region at German Wine Culture – Discover the Golden Six of Rheinland-Pfalz.

Rheinland-Pfalz: Where Gold in the Glass

When people think of Germany, beer and Oktoberfest often come to mind. Yet Germany also has a winemaking history spanning more than 2,000 years, with grape varieties and wine styles that have earned recognition around the world.

Among the most celebrated is Riesling, a white grape capable of producing a remarkable range of styles, from fresh, elegant dry wines to complex sweet expressions. Meanwhile, Spätburgunder, known internationally as Pinot Noir, has helped establish Germany’s reputation for refined red wines.

Within this landscape, Rheinland-Pfalz holds a particularly important position. Located in southwestern Germany, the state is home to six of the country’s 13 quality wine-growing regions. According to the state’s tourism authority, around 70% of German wine is produced here.

The Golden Six: Six Treasures of German Wine

Rheinland-Pfalz brings together six renowned wine regions under the name The Golden Six. Each has its own distinctive character, contributing to the diversity of German wine.

  • Ahr: A small wine region renowned for Pinot Noir and vineyards on steep hillsides.
  • Mittelrhein: Picturesque vineyards along the Rhine, surrounded by historic towns and medieval castles.
  • Mosel: A celebrated Riesling region known for its steep, slate-covered slopes.
  • Nahe: Distinguished by its diverse soils and wide range of Riesling styles.
  • Pfalz: A sunny wine region associated with the German Wine Route and a relaxed outdoor wine culture.
  • Rheinhessen: Germany’s largest wine-growing region, where tradition meets the innovative spirit of a new generation of winemakers.

Beyond its beautiful vineyards, Rheinland-Pfalz attracts visitors with wine festivals, scenic touring routes, historic villages and winery visits. Here, wine is more than an agricultural product. It is closely connected to tourism, the local economy and the cultural identity of the region.

Another distinctive tradition is the annual selection of the German Wine Queen. Candidates are assessed on their wine knowledge, communication skills and ability to promote German wine culture. More than a title, the role represents the country’s wine industry and the heritage of its wine-growing regions.

For Rheinland-Pfalz, the message “Gold in the Glass” evokes more than the colour of wine. It represents the value of the land, its traditions, its creativity and the people behind every bottle.

German Wine Experience: Discovering the Golden Six in Ho Chi Minh City

Ms Phan Thụy My, Business Representative Office of the German Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate in Vietnam

On 16 October 2026, German Wine Experience brought the story of Rheinland-Pfalz and its wine culture closer to Vietnam’s wine community. Held at La Haye Metropole restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, the evening offered a welcoming setting for guests to connect, explore wine and enjoy food together.

The event was organised by Gold Rheinland-Pfalz in collaboration with Rosemary Wine and Gifts, with support from Ngonista. Guided by Ms Phan Thụy My, Business Representative Office of the German Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate in Vietnam, guests were introduced to the region and the distinctive qualities that shape German wine.

Attendees included business owners, business representatives and wine enthusiasts. Beyond the opportunity to taste a selection of wines, the event created a relaxed environment for guests to exchange perspectives, share their interests and build connections with others in the industry.

Six Wines, Six Experiences

The highlight of the evening was a tasting journey featuring six selected wines, paired with food:

  1. Fritz Müller – Perlwein Rosa Trocken
  2. Villa Wolf – Gewürztraminer
  3. Selbach-Oster – Spätburgunder Trocken
  4. Rappenhof – 1604 Cuvée
  5. Thörle – Riesling Trocken
  6. Dr. Loosen – Riesling Sparkling

From rosé sparkling wine and white wines to red wine, the six selections offered a glimpse into the diversity of German wine styles. Each bottle invited guests to explore different expressions of grape varieties, flavours and the individual character that winemakers bring to their wines.

The food pairings added another dimension to the experience. Wine and food do not exist in isolation; when thoughtfully combined, they can complement and enhance one another, revealing new layers of flavour. These pairings also created opportunities for conversation and discovery around the table.

When Wine Becomes a Bridge Between Cultures

Wine is more than the expression of a region’s land and flavours. It is also a bridge between cultures, bringing people together through shared experiences and stories. Through German Wine Experience, the story of Rheinland-Pfalz travelled beyond Germany’s vineyards, reaching Vietnam’s wine community and creating opportunities for cultural exchange.

Sometimes, a glass of wine is more than an invitation to explore new flavours. It is an opportunity to discover a new place, appreciate its cultural heritage and find common ground with others through the stories shared around the table.
